I heard from many, many students that they had to pay certain fees for events that they don't even like nor participate in involuntarily. I, for one, hate sports and would never allow my money to be used for anything that I didn't benefit from. It must be just me but, I would drop out of any university or other institution for this rip off.

UT is a mess. I have three sons that are going to be choosing colleges soon I'm sad to have to steer them clear ot this university. Ohio State in the North is looking good and Washington Univ. in St. Louis (unfortunate)

???We moved here 2 years ago.  I was excited to be living in a University town again.  However my husband and are shocked at the poor state of dis-repair UT has  been allowed to fall into.  The Board of Trustees evidently don't care that the buildings are falling down.  How can they expect to attract the brightest and smartest kids when the whole place looks like a dump. They sure do pour a lot of bucks into the football program and stadium but what has this done for the student athlete graduation rate?  Nothing!!!   I would also like to add a comment about all the drug test the football players are not passing.  The coach needs to pull their scholarships and kick them off the program when they fail the very first drug test.

Stephanie,

They don't kick them off until they have had the prerequisite four chances and verification that their loss will not impact bowl chances. Roll Eyes

I just wanted to stop by and say that I got my B.A. from UT, then went away for a few years and now I am back at UT. getting an M.S.
I have seen a big improvement in UT since coming back. It is still really screwed up in many ways, but I bet most universities are to some extent. I don't like having to pay fees for things that I don't use, but it's just a fact of life. I am not a big fan of athletics, but the athletics do bring more revenue and prestige to our school, so it's a trade-off of sorts.
One thing that does bother me, however, is that when I go to UT for my evening classes, they want me to pay to park if there is a basketball game going on. Well, I'm sorry, but I spent $155 on a commuter parking permit, I am not going to pay AGAIN just because there is a ball game going on. :/ If they want to have athletic events, that's great, but they shouldn't interfere with academics.
I'm happy UT won against Kentucky yesterday, but I wonder if the players will get a fair shot at studying for finals since they're going to a bowl game. Or are finals just a joke to the football team?
Well, that's just my two cents.

What does it matter if they study for finals or not,if He can play football,it doesn't matter,as one very famous Player and He played for UT and Pro Ball and He is in both Halls of fame.I asked him point blank what He studied while a student at UT and He said Football. He said He didn't go to UT to study,He went to play football, and He left UT to play Pro completely unscathed by education. The same way most sports figures leave, and yes it is a waste of any dollars, because they go to school in the hope they will get to play in the big time, some do,some don't but they are for the most part functioning on grade school level, and that is a shame. On Them.

Yeah, that is a shame. Sad I always wondered if it was a myth that they didn't care about education, it's sad, because a career in football could be cut short at any time by an accident or injury. Then again, there are probably exceptions to this non-academic trend, don't you think?
