Would you rather be in a restaurant or bar that allows handguns or bans them?
The Tennessee Legislature has overridden Gov. Phil Bredesen's veto of a bill allowing handguns in restaurants and bars and it will become law on July 14.
Citizens with handgun permits will be able to carry their firearms into establishments that serve alcohol so long as they don't drink alcohol.

Another wonderful waste of money.
Why do we want our politicians wasting taxpayers money voting on new laws like this. We have more serious problems to address. Also some of the people that are consuming alcohol already have a weapon, it's called a CAR!
Great point! Drunk drivers
Great point! Drunk drivers lack any ambition to help their fellow man.
I believe that this law is a
I believe that this law is a step in the right direction. If you pass the background check and the HCP carry class, you should be allowed to carry anywhere in the state that issues the permit. The only exception I see as reasonable is possibly in a court of law. If not for the Supreme Courts long held, unconstitutional policy towards this issue, we would have not been in this situation in the first place. Congress, not the Court nor the Executive branch, is the branch of government that formulates and passes laws. These laws must pass Constitutional muster. That is where the Court comes in, are these laws within the powers granted by the Constitution? If so, it is then the Executive Branch`s duty to enforce these laws the way Congress intended them to be. American History-101.
The legistators of the State of Tennessee are doing what the people elected them to do. Perhaps we should consider turning some of these money-losing state golf courses into public firing ranges so those of us who do carry can become more proficient shooters and less likely to miss the intended target in an act of self-defense and hit an innocent bystander.
Alcohol and guns never mix
As someone who used to work in a nightclub (in another state), it wouldn't have been a good place to work in knowing folks were able to legally carrying guns inside.
As someone wrote in response to an article about a man who was found intoxicated after making violent threats against one or more people - who also has a permit to carry:

"Good people mind the law, the bad could care less."
Whether or not this idiotic piece of legislation makes it past the Governor's veto, good people will mind the law. Those who want to illegally bring guns in - wherever - will continue to do so but we sure don't need a law allowing guns where alcohol is being served - permit or no. That's like being given permission to add gasoline to an already raging fire.
Anyone who's worked on domestic violence cases, worked with anyone with an alcohol problem (on both sides of the law) and other such situations that can easily and quickly escalate and get out of control knows the high potential for volitility of such a situation.
I'm glad the governor followed his conscience and vetoed the idiocy. I'd hope the legislators would know better and would use some common sense ... but I have come to know not to expect much from them. In this particular case, "common sense" flew out the window when this Bill was introduced.
Unbelievably, the overwhelming lack of common sense seems to be more common these days with TN legislators! I am truly disgusted and discouraged with TN politicians these days!!
Excellent point! This makes
Excellent point! This makes me wonder if our legislators know anything about gun crime at all. I bet they use Wikipedia for everything =)
This seems like a loaded
This seems like a loaded question to try and get people to vote for Ban Handguns sence WATE included Bars which isn't in the bill only Resturants, but at this time those voteing seem to think either is fine...I wonder of all the bills that go thru why the media wants to sensationalize one that has handgun in it....
Guns in Restaurants with booze
Why do the ones voting for this stupid bill think they and their kids will be safer because it does not include "bars, saloons, beer joints, or clubs? By the time a licensed gun owner shoots up an O'Charleys, Applebees, Chili's, it will be too late to 'check his/her license to go armed into family restaurants where booze is served?
As one Legislator said to me: "This just proves that the NRA and their lobbyists own our Legislature, lock, stock, and barrel."
And all the law enforcement folks were standing behind Bredesen when he signed the veto BECAUSE THEY KNOW THIS STUPIDITY WILL CAUSE MORE INNOCENTS TO DIE AT THE HANDS OF THE GUN-TOTIN' FOOLS.
Great point Mary!
Great point Mary!
Who checks the people that
Who checks the people that are drinking at these bars and resturants to ensure they arent driving? Way more people die from drunk drivers than legally armed tax paying citizens. If you ask me we should make it illegal to consume alcohol outside of your primary residence, then everyone should be safer.
Yeah, and then we can take
Yeah, and then we can take it the next step further and reinstate Prohibition, lol
